Alright, picture this: You’re watching your favorite show, and right when it’s getting good—buffering.

Not because your internet sucks, but because your provider decided, “You know what? Let’s mess with this guy’s night until he coughs up an extra ten bucks.” That’s where we’re headed, folks. Welcome to the post-net-neutrality internet.

What Just Happened?

So here’s the deal: Net neutrality is gone. Again. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals just told the FCC, “Yeah, you don’t get to tell internet providers how to do their jobs.”

And these providers? Oh, they’re loving this. It’s like giving your landlord permission to charge you for every step you take in your own apartment.

Why Judges Are “Winging It”

Here’s what went down: The FCC wanted to treat ISPs like phone companies under this thing called Title II. That way, they could stop them from pulling shady moves, like slowing down websites they don’t like or charging extra to make your stuff load. Sounds fair, right? But the judges? They were like, “Nah, we don’t see it. You guys aren’t the boss of Comcast.”

And then there’s this thing called Chevron deference. It used to mean, “Hey, maybe we should listen to the experts.” But last year, the Supreme Court was like, “Nah, we don’t need that.” So now judges are out here winging it—making calls on tech stuff they barely understand. I bet one of them still thinks the internet runs on fax machines.

And let’s talk about the ruling itself. These judges went full philosophy major. They’re debating whether a thought in your head counts as information. Meanwhile, I’m just over here thinking, “Who cares? I just want to watch a video without it freezing like it’s 2005 again.”

What This Means for You

So what does this mean for us regular people? Without net neutrality, ISPs can do whatever they want. Want to use Instagram? That’ll cost you extra. Want your YouTube videos to load in less than three years? Better upgrade to the “Platinum Streamer Package.” It’s like they’re sitting there thinking, “How can we make people miss the days of dial-up?”

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel is saying Congress needs to step in. She’s like, “People want a fast, open, and fair internet!” Yeah, no kidding, Jessica. But good luck convincing Congress. Those guys can’t even agree on what to order for lunch, let alone fix the internet.

And then there’s Brendan Carr, one of the commissioners, calling this a “win for the country.” A win for who, Brendan? The ISPs? Because it sure isn’t a win for the rest of us who are about to get nickel-and-dimed just to scroll through TikTok.

Oh, and let’s not forget Ajit Pai. Remember him? The guy with the giant Reese’s mug who killed net neutrality the first time?

Yeah, he’s back, taking victory laps online like he just won the Super Bowl. Congrats, Ajit, you really nailed it—now the internet is as fun as waiting at the DMV.

Bottom line: Without net neutrality, your internet is basically turning into a toll road. Every click? A charge. Every stream? A surcharge. And unless Congress pulls off a miracle—which, let’s be real, they won’t—this is the new normal.

So what do you think? Is this the internet we deserve, or do we just need to accept it and start budgeting for the “Buffer-Free Premium Plan”? Either way, I’ll be here, probably yelling at my router.

That’s your quick hit on net neutrality’s latest takedown. Like, subscribe, and tell me—what’s the most ridiculous internet slowdown you’ve ever had? You’ve been watching Patch Notes, where content creators and marketers get their video news. See you next time!
